RPGIs Full Gear worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Roguelike players who want turn-based combat with permadeath and no permanent progression
- Tactical players who enjoy arranging timed effects and building combat drones
- Players who want either immediate access to all items or gradual unlocking through a second mode
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want character progression to carry from one run into the next will hit a wall in Traditional Mode, which has no progression.
- Players who dislike learning through repeated deaths may bounce off the game's unknown attacks, item interactions, and permadeath.
- Players seeking a tightly linear adventure may find the run-based structure and randomized equipment combinations too open-ended.
- Players who prefer direct combat without system management may struggle with cogwheels, Wheel Tokens, drones, Goals, and item combinations.
Our take on Full Gear
The bounce point arrives when a run ends permanently after an unfamiliar attack. Players must retain information from failure, then manage cogwheel slots, token timing, drone construction, and item interactions before another attempt can progress.
What is Full Gear?
Full Gear is a steampunk traditional roguelike built around turn-based combat, permadeath, and no permanent progression in Traditional Mode.
Runs span 8 areas within one large room and include more than 300 items, over 50 enemy types, 6 NPCs, 6 main bosses, and a final boss. Players assemble drones from Parts at Drone Stations, then use them for extra attacks or distractions. Wheel Tokens activate effects such as healing, shielding, critical hits, Scrap, or drone fire when they reach the top of a cogwheel. Modern Mode gradually unlocks item sets, boosts, and Toolboxes, while Traditional Mode starts with all items available. Goals can unlock items, and runs can use seeds, challenges, and boosts.
How Full Gear plays
- 01Constructible Combat Drones
- Parts can be combined at Drone Stations to create companions with different weapons and movement behavior.
- 02Wheel Token Timing
- Cogwheels determine when arranged tokens trigger effects such as healing, shielding, critical hits, Scrap, or drone attacks.
- 03Two Play Modes
- Modern Mode introduces item sets, boosts, and Toolboxes gradually, while Traditional Mode makes all items available from the beginning.
- 04Goal-Based Unlocks
- Tracked objectives can open items whose uses interact with the game's combat and equipment systems.
- 05Run Customization
- Seeds, 9 boosts, and 9 challenges alter runs, with the latter two options able to increase or reduce difficulty.
