Our take on Fantastic Creatures
Many 4X games build toward a long mid-to-late game; this one aims to reach a result in a couple of hours. That shorter campaign structure is its clearest departure from the genre's usual extended arc, while retaining exploration, settlement, research and faction-based play.
What is Fantastic Creatures?
Choose the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird or Black Turtle and explore Tian, a changing realm where resources are scarce and the land is dying.
Discover anomalies, resources and encounters, establish cities around Pillars, and develop a faction through historic inventions and other technologies. The game includes 20 units drawn from Chinese dynastic history and folklore. Qi and Jade are valuable resources connected to divine power, while deposits can be overexploited. A main quest investigates why the realm of the gods is dying, and decisions about restoring balance can bring rewards. Combat uses dice rolls, with faction affinities influencing possible outcomes. Victory or defeat is intended to arrive within a couple of hours.
