Our take on Faerie Afterlight
Rather than centering exploration on a single hero, the game makes simultaneous control of Kimo and Wispy part of its central structure. Progress depends on changing the surroundings with one character and using those changes with the other, while some encounters can become friendships.
What is Faerie Afterlight?
Faerie Afterlight is a 2D Metroidvania set in a world inspired by Indonesian folklore, philosophy, and folk art.
Kimo and Wispy travel together through caverns, seas, forests, and ruined cities while recovering scattered Shards of Light. Players control both characters at once: Wispy shifts platforms, walls, and blocked routes, while Kimo uses surfaces to bounce and repel. Exploration includes hidden doors, secluded areas, and concealed passages. Some enemies can be befriended, while others can be engaged or enchanted. Defeating corrupted Titans grants abilities such as wall-clinging Spider Legs and Beetle Horns for dashing, opening access to additional parts of Lumina.
How Faerie Afterlight plays
- 01Dual Character Control
- Wispy changes the environment while Kimo moves through it by bouncing from altered surfaces.
- 02Terrain Manipulation
- Platforms, walls, and blocked paths can be repositioned to create routes and solve puzzles.
- 03Selective Friendships
- Certain enemies can become allies instead of being confronted directly.
- 04Titan Abilities
- Overcoming corrupted Titans grants movement powers that open previously inaccessible areas.
- 05Hidden Exploration
- The world contains concealed entrances, secluded spaces, and covered routes across several terrain types.
Faerie Afterlight compared to similar games
Sundered: Eldritch Edition is also a Metroidvania, but its description presents a chaotic format with previous updates and a new content update, while Faerie Afterlight centers on two-character control, terrain manipulation, puzzles, and selective enemy friendships. The other listed alternatives describe climbing, shooting, running, or multiplayer action rather than a Metroidvania exploration workflow.
