Is Exogate Initiative worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who want both facility construction and expedition management
- Players interested in managing teams with relationships, needs, and permanent deaths
- Science-fiction fans who prefer autonomous missions with occasional high-stakes decisions
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking direct control over every action during expeditions may bounce off the autonomous Gater mission system.
- Players wanting a tightly focused base builder may find the combination of staff care, alien research, faction relations, and exploration too broad.
- Players looking for a purely combat-focused strategy game may find facility management and team welfare take up too much of the experience.
- Players who prefer fixed outcomes may dislike missions involving relationships, deaths, negotiations, and branching decisions.
Our take on Exogate Initiative
Players who want direct, moment-to-moment control may hit a wall when Gaters leave on autonomous missions. The friction comes when crucial choices are presented between periods of independent activity, rather than from directing every expedition step by step.
What is Exogate Initiative?
Exogate Initiative is a management and base-building game about establishing an underground facility for interstellar exploration.
Players excavate space, construct rooms, and install specialised equipment as the initiative expands. Specialists and autonomous explorers, called Gaters, can be recruited, trained, equipped, and assigned to missions. Their needs include food, shelter, equipment, and emotional support, while relationships and deaths affect the team. Expeditions involve studying alien life, collecting samples, making important decisions, and reporting discoveries to secure financing. The facility must also withstand hostile aliens and interact with other factions through resistance, combat, and negotiation. Research can unlock weapons, technologies, and additional character classes.
How Exogate Initiative plays
- 01Underground Facility
- Excavation can create new rooms and accommodate specialised equipment as the initiative grows.
- 02Autonomous Explorers
- Gaters conduct missions independently while returning to the player for important decisions.
- 03Team Care
- Staff require provisions, suitable equipment, living arrangements, and emotional support.
- 04Alien Research
- Expeditions can produce samples for developing new technology and studying unfamiliar life.
- 05Faction Relations
- Other groups can be resisted, defeated, or negotiated with through 4X gameplay.
Exogate Initiative compared to similar games
Xenonauts focuses on a multinational military organisation, persistent soldiers, small squads, turn-based combat, and recovering alien technology. Exogate Initiative instead combines underground facility construction, specialist care, autonomous explorers, alien study, and faction negotiation. Old World centers on leading a historical empire across generations, including political marriages and heirs, rather than running an interstellar research initiative.
