Our take on Delver
The permadeath structure gives each run clear stakes, but it sacrifices persistent progress after a failed attempt. Procedural dungeons add variation, while demanding combat leaves little room for using grinding as a substitute for skill.
What is Delver?
Delver is a single-player, first-person action roguelike set in shifting dungeons.
Each run involves fighting monsters, using wands, collecting potions, and looting items while pursuing the Yithidian orb. Permadeath means a death ends the current attempt and starts the next run anew in the dungeon. Procedural generation changes the dungeon between runs, while combat combines first-person action with classic RPG mechanics. The game pairs straightforward gameplay with demanding challenges, and grinding cannot replace skill. Its visual presentation uses chunky pixel graphics.
How Delver plays
- 01Procedural Dungeons
- Dungeon layouts change between attempts, so successive runs do not follow the same structure.
- 02Permadeath Runs
- Dying ends the current run and requires a fresh attempt from the beginning.
- 03Wand Combat
- The combat loop includes using wands while fighting dungeon monsters.
- 04RPG Mechanics
- The first-person combat is paired with classic role-playing systems and item collection.
Delver compared to similar games
Delver focuses on single-player first-person dungeon combat with procedural runs, permadeath, wands, potions, and loot. Vagante also presents an unforgiving adventure with monsters and treasure, but its description centers on a dark fantasy world and quests for fame, riches, and power. Ghost of a Tale instead emphasizes exploration, stealth, disguises, and conversations in a medieval world populated by animals.
