Our take on Dawn of the Mexica
The historical and mythical setting receives strong emphasis, while the practical play loop centers on demanding combat, survival conditions, and character management. The setting gives the game a distinct frame, but most described systems concern tactical encounters and maintaining a vulnerable character.
What is Dawn of the Mexica?
Set among the myths of the Valley of Mexico during the Culhua-Mexica Empire and the Spanish invasion, this game uses turn-based combat and procedurally generated scenarios.
Each run has different levels, and character death is permanent. Battles account for weapon and armor combinations and can cause body-part injuries, burning, freezing, blindness, deafness, bleeding, stunning, or unconsciousness. Character development includes 9 stats, 12 classes, more than a hundred spells, and more than 40 skills. Dynamic lighting and shadows matter in the sunless setting. Weather and survival mechanics affect temperature, with even a torch able to change the surrounding conditions. The story begins when Huitzilopochtli, the sun god, fails to rise. Mouse and keyboard controls are supported.
