Our take on Dawn of the Ashen Queen
The dungeon-crawler format prioritizes deliberate grid-based exploration, party development, and text-led storytelling, so it gives up free-roaming movement and a purely combat-focused pace.
What is Dawn of the Ashen Queen?
Dawn of the Ashen Queen is a first-person, grid-based dungeon-crawling RPG set in Eshavon after a devastating war.
Players form a party, oversee reconstruction as an emissary, and investigate an attack that reveals a threat to the continent. Character creation includes multiple races, classes, traits, point-based abilities, and class-specific skill trees. Three NPCs join the party during the game, each with an individual personality. Exploration spans forests, caverns, ice mountains, crypts, fog-covered woods, and ancient halls, with secret doors, illusionary walls, puzzles, and traps. Combat runs in real time and uses weapons, spells, and abilities. Text-based cutscenes, dialogue, and party banter carry the narrative.

Dawn of the Ashen Queen compared to similar games
Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on an unconventional story, characters, and exploration of a strange city, while Dawn of the Ashen Queen combines first-person grid-based movement with dungeon secrets, party creation, and real-time combat. Back to the Dawn is a prison-escape RPG focused on survival, investigation, crime, corruption, and hidden agendas, rather than Eshavon's fantasy expedition and curse investigation.
