- Players who prefer fixed environments, since the labyrinth changes for each new adventure
- Players looking for a single-character RPG rather than a six-hero party
Our take on Dark Gates
The focus on changing labyrinth expeditions trades a fixed world structure for repeated runs with shifting layouts. Permanent death adds consequence to party selection, but a lost hero may require a Resurrection spell or replacement party.
What is Dark Gates?
Assemble a party of six heroes, select their spells, and enter a labyrinth where Dark Gates are concealed behind mirrors.
The maze changes with each new adventure, while its map unfolds during exploration. Chambers are locked and may contain traps, monsters, and hidden items. Encounters can be handled through turn-based combat, negotiation, or bribery with gold. Party composition matters, including the ability to pick locks and disarm traps. If a hero dies, only a Resurrection spell can restore them if used quickly. If the whole party dies, the current adventure can continue with a new party when other heroes are still available.
How Dark Gates plays
- 01Six-Hero Parties
- The selected heroes and balance of their abilities affect the party’s chances during an adventure.
- 02Changing Labyrinths
- The maze layout differs when a new adventure begins, and its map appears as exploration continues.
- 03Flexible Encounters
- Some monsters can be defeated, negotiated with, or bribed with gold.
- 04Locked Chambers
- Rooms may contain traps and require heroes who can open locks or disable them.
- 05Permanent Death
- A fallen hero needs a quickly cast Resurrection spell, while a defeated party can be replaced if other heroes remain.
