Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a linear sequence of levels may hit a wall in the nonlinear, interconnected world.
- Players who prefer puzzles with clearly prescribed solutions may find the open-ended problem solving difficult to follow.
- Players looking for a conventional inventory system may find the environment-based resource system limiting.
Our take on Ctrl Alt Ego
The likely sticking point is the open-ended problem solving: players who expect clear instructions or one intended puzzle solution may stall when the game leaves the approach to them. The shift between hosts and devices is another specific hurdle for anyone who prefers to remain in one character throughout.
What is Ctrl Alt Ego?
Ctrl Alt Ego is a first-person puzzle game with role-playing and immersive-sim elements.
The player is a disembodied consciousness that can move between robots and devices, using their abilities to tackle problems. Its world is interconnected and nonlinear, with challenges that can be approached through shooting, stealth, pacifism, or other player-chosen methods. Rather than carrying an inventory, the player uses objects in the environment as a resource. Possessed robots remain available to collect and use, and movement between areas can involve controlling them or jumping between locations.
The player’s consciousness persists if a host is destroyed, allowing a switch to another host instead of a conventional player death. A save-and-load system is also included. The story uses dark farce to explore the future of human consciousness.
How Ctrl Alt Ego plays
- 01Persistent consciousness
- When a controlled robot is destroyed, the player can continue by taking over another host.
- 02Robot collection
- Robots taken over can be kept and gathered into a group for later use.
- 03Multiple approaches
- Challenges can be handled with combat, stealth, pacifism, or other creative tactics.
- 04Environmental resources
- Objects in the surroundings serve as the player’s available inventory.
