RPGIs Crystal Project worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- JRPG players who want to choose their own exploration goals
- Tactical RPG fans who want turn previews and control over enemy targeting
- Exploration-focused players who enjoy platforming and searching for optional discoveries
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a mostly linear route may find the open-ended exploration difficult to navigate.
- Players who dislike platforming may hit a wall when reaching areas that require jumping and climbing.
- Players looking for a cooperative game may not find the team-based combat they want.
Our take on Crystal Project
The likely sticking point is the platforming: reaching loot and other discoveries requires jumping and climbing, so players who want exploration without traversal challenges may stall there. The nonlinear structure can also leave players unsure which objective to pursue next.
What is Crystal Project?
Crystal Project is a nonlinear JRPG set in the land of Sequoia.
Explore at a chosen pace: pursue Crystals, collect equipment and artifacts, tame creatures, fill an archive, hunt monsters, or search distant areas for mysteries. Battles have no random encounters; players can manage Threat and preview turn order, damage, and probabilities. Find classes, assign subclasses, choose passive abilities, and equip special items to shape party roles and tactics. Progression follows a Metroidvania-style structure, with platforming challenges and jumping and climbing used to reach loot and other discoveries. Zones connect without loading screens, and the game states that there are no permanent missables.
How Crystal Project plays
- 01Battle previews
- Turn order, damage, and probabilities can be checked before actions are resolved.
- 02Party customization
- Classes, subclasses, passive abilities, and equipment can be combined into distinct team setups.
- 03Exploration platforming
- Jumping and climbing open routes to loot and other discoveries.
- 04Threat management
- Threat can be adjusted to influence which party member an enemy targets.
