Our take on Chroma Wars
Its defining structure is the split between turn-based square-map battles and a separate managing phase for purchasing, upgrading, and organizing the army.
What is Chroma Wars?
Chroma Wars is a retro, turn-based strategy RPG set in a parallel future version of Earth.
Battles take place on square maps, where troops are positioned against abyssal creatures and other enemies. Between missions, the managing phase lets commanders purchase, upgrade, and organize units at a fortified base. Available forces include melee infantry, gunners, tanks, power-armors, war mechs, and techno-wizards, with air support also available. Units have distinct characteristics and special abilities. The campaign contains 10 missions focused on reclaiming lost territories and defending a military base in a dying desert. A point-and-click interface and pre-rendered graphics reflect the game's early-2000s Flash origins.
How Chroma Wars plays
- 01Unit management
- Units can be bought, improved, and arranged at the fortified camp between battles.
- 02Mixed army roster
- The forces include shock infantry, gunners, tanks, war mechs, techno-wizards, and homeland air support.
- 03Special abilities
- Units can use distinct abilities that increase their combat capabilities.
- 04Ten-mission campaign
- The story follows a 10-mission effort to reclaim territory and protect a military base.
- 05Flash-era presentation
- The game uses nostalgic 1990s-style pre-rendered graphics and a point-and-click interface.
Chroma Wars compared to similar games
Chroma Wars combines turn-based square-map warfare with a separate base-management phase, unit purchases, and upgrades. Shogun Showdown also uses turn-based combat, but centers on attack tiles, combo construction, skill selection, and a roguelike structure rather than army management. The other listed alternatives do not describe the same strategy-RPG workflow.
