Instead of issuing defense commands primarily with a mouse, Castle Formers puts the player directly in control of a monarch within a platform-game structure. Castle protection becomes an action-navigation loop involving movement, exploration, resource gathering, NPC commands, and nighttime defense.

Castle Formers combines castle defense with platform-game movement.
The player controls a king or queen with a keyboard or gamepad, navigating one scenario, interacting with non-player characters and the environment, and protecting a castle gate, a statue of life, and the character. Each day and night lasts 3 minutes, and completing the game requires surviving 30 days. Daytime activities include gathering resources from bushes and plants, hunting, and finding treasures. Gold can be spent on training soldiers, improving weapons, preparing food, using spells, and other defensive actions. NPCs perform different functions when commanded and paid. Progress depends on discovering tactics and secrets through gameplay and trial and error.
