Our take on Captive
The short format keeps the focus on escape puzzles and the unfolding mystery, but leaves less room for extended exploration or broader role-playing systems. Permadeath also makes failed attempts more consequential, which may limit its appeal for relaxed play.
What is Captive?
A woman wakes badly injured in an unfamiliar cell with no memory of who she is or how she arrived there.
Her condition worsens as she searches for a way out, requiring quick thinking while dangers obstruct her path. Gameplay combines escape-room-inspired mechanics with puzzles and problem solving, alongside a survival system centered on preventing fatal blood loss. The story gradually exposes the mystery surrounding the protagonist and her confinement. Horror and gore shape the atmosphere, supported by original sprites and artwork. Captive offers a short playthrough, multiple endings, and permadeath, making each failed attempt consequential as the player tries to escape before her injuries become fatal.
How Captive plays
- 01Gradual Story Reveal
- The circumstances surrounding the protagonist and her confinement become clearer over the course of the game.
- 02Puzzle-Based Escape
- Progress depends on solving problems within an escape-room-style structure.
- 03Blood Loss Survival
- The protagonist's worsening injuries create a time-sensitive survival pressure during the escape.
- 04Multiple Endings
- Different outcomes are available at the conclusion of the story.
- 05Permadeath
- A failed attempt can end the current run rather than returning the protagonist to continued play.
Captive compared to similar games
Back to the Dawn is a prison-escape RPG built around fighting, investigation, crime, corruption, and inmate agendas in a maximum-security facility. Captive instead centers on a short horror escape from an unknown cell, with puzzles, blood-loss survival, multiple endings, and permadeath.
