Our take on Calyx
Its defining structure is the tension between expanding a mining operation and containing plant-aliens that spread across the map when left unchecked.
What is Calyx?
Calyx combines real-time strategy with base building on a barren planet occupied by hostile plant-aliens.
Establish a mining outpost, connect power networks, operate Harvesters, refine Ore, and send it to orbit for Credits. Walls, turrets, tanks, and artillery defend and expand the base, while energy management keeps vital systems running. Secure rare deposits and connect booster buildings for added power, mining, and healing effects. The Early Access campaign includes a tutorial, 16 maps, five difficulty levels, a tech tree, upgrades, and five Calyx species. Skirmish mode adds seven maps, configurable roots, resources, Ore fields, technology levels, and generated layouts with shareable seeds.
How Calyx plays
- 01Power Network Management
- Energy allocation determines whether defensive structures remain operational.
- 02Tech Tree Progression
- Research Points unlock technologies and upgrades for units and buildings.
- 03Configurable Skirmishes
- Skirmish games allow changes to Calyx roots, starting resources, Ore fields, technology level, and generated layouts.
- 04Calyx Variants
- The campaign includes five species of plant-based enemies with different varieties encountered during battles.
- 05Shareable Challenges
- Players can share a map seed so others can use the same skirmish setup.
Calyx compared to similar games
Calyx uses real-time base building, mining, power management, and direct deployment of tanks and artillery against spreading plant-aliens. Xenonauts instead centers on a Cold War-era multinational military organization, persistent soldiers, and turn-based squad operations against extraterrestrials.
