Is Bonfire worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Tactical RPG players who want short runs built around consequential decisions
- Strategy players who enjoy experimenting with unusual party combinations
- RPG players who prefer gloomy stories set across procedurally generated journeys
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking forgiving battles may hit a wall when decisions cannot be undone and mistakes can be fatal.
- Players wanting a long, fixed campaign may find the procedurally generated journey and short sessions too variable.
- Players who prefer familiar RPG class roles may not enjoy experimenting with combinations outside common archetypes.
Our take on Bonfire
The bounce point comes when a tactical mistake can prove fatal and decisions cannot be reversed. Players who expect to undo choices or recover from errors may hit that wall during combat; runs are short, but the consequences within them are not.
What is Bonfire?
Bonfire is a procedurally generated tactical RPG about Hildie and a group of misfit heroes crossing a desolate world to confront the Faceless Overlord of the Mournfolk.
Battles use rapid turn-based encounters where contextual abilities and tactical items take the place of menu navigation. Each action matters, and encounters become puzzles shaped by the choices available in combat. Players expand their pool of heroes, abilities, and items while meeting unusual survivors across changing locations. Classes support varied combinations rather than common RPG archetypes. Failure is part of the structure: decisions are final, mistakes can be fatal, and runs are short enough to allow quick adjustments. The game supports endless play while its story reaches an ending.
How Bonfire plays
- 01Procedural Journeys
- Generated journeys bring changing locations, survivors, and tactical options.
- 02Contextual Combat
- Abilities and items are used in battle without menu navigation, and each move carries weight.
- 03Flexible Party Builds
- Heroes, abilities, items, and classes can be combined in setups that depart from common RPG archetypes.
- 04Short Runs
- Fatal mistakes can end a run, while brief sessions make it possible to adjust and try again.
- 05Story With an Ending
- The game allows endless play but also brings its story to a conclusion.
Bonfire compared to similar games
Shogun Showdown also uses turn-based combat where each action matters, but its described systems include upgrading attack tiles, combining attacks, and building a deck before facing the Shogun. Bonfire focuses instead on generated journeys and experimenting with heroes, abilities, items, and party combinations. Back to the Dawn is an RPG about investigating prison life and escaping, rather than Bonfire's tactical battles and party builds.
