Our take on Black Legend
The focus on tactical planning, alchemy interactions, and team construction means combat requires more attention than a straightforward character-action RPG. The selectable difficulty also creates a sharp divide between story-led play and heavily punishing mistakes.
What is Black Legend?
Lead mercenaries supporting a resistance in Grant, a cursed 17th-century city affected by a deadly fog and controlled by the Mephistian Cult.
Exploration allows searches for hidden sidequests, treasure, and recruitable characters before tactical, turn-based battles. Combat uses four alchemical instabilities, Catalyst Attacks, class abilities, and equipment, with enemies using the same alchemy system. The game includes 15 playable classes with distinct abilities and gear, plus cross-class combinations for team building. Players can investigate the history of Mephisto, fight creatures drawn from regional folklore, and choose between a gentler story-focused difficulty or a setting where mistakes receive severe penalties.
How Black Legend plays

- Four instabilities can be combined with Catalyst Attacks, while enemies can use the same mechanics.

- 03Free-roaming exploration
- Searching Grant can reveal optional quests, treasure, and characters available for recruitment.
- 04Cross-class customization

- 05Selectable difficulty
- Difficulty ranges from a gentler story-focused setting to one where small mistakes are heavily punished.
Black Legend compared to similar games
Black Legend combines turn-based tactical combat with alchemy, 15 classes, free exploration, and team customization. Back to the Dawn is an RPG about surviving and escaping a maximum-security prison through fighting and investigation, while Shogun Showdown centers on turn-based positioning, attack tiles, deck building, and roguelike progression. Their settings and progression structures therefore differ from Black Legend's resistance campaign in a cursed 17th-century city.
