Our take on ASCIILL
Its defining constraint is the blocked video signal: the temple communicates through alphanumeric characters, making number reading part of movement and trap avoidance.
What is ASCIILL?
ASCIILL is a retro dungeon crawler set in an alien temple where information is transmitted as alphanumeric characters.
Agent ASCIILL follows B. O. S. S. ’s orders to collect treasures, destroy alien creatures, and disable the security system. Numbers in each cell indicate how many traps surround that position, making route selection part of exploration. Trap and treasure positions are randomly generated for each playthrough, while the levels are nonlinear. Combat includes shooting and throwing TNT or grenades, with encounters in underwater areas and waterfalls. Keyboard, gamepad, and mouse controls are available. Extra lives can disable the trap that caused a fall, but bugs, lasers, and drowning can still force a level restart. The game also includes a light mode accessible from the menu.
How ASCIILL plays
- 01Number-Based Movement
- Values shown in cells indicate the number of nearby traps, making them route clues during exploration.
- 02Randomized Trap Placement
- Trap and treasure locations change between playthroughs, while the generation system keeps treasures and narrow passages reachable.
- 03Multiple Control Methods
- The game supports keyboard, gamepad, and mouse controls for movement, selection, menus, and attacks.
- 04Trap Recovery
- An extra life disables the trap that caused a fall, although bugs, lasers, and drowning still require restarting the level.
- 05Explosive Combat
- Agent ASCIILL can shoot or throw TNT and grenades at alien creatures.
