Is Aquarelle worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Players drawn to surreal settings who want to explore virtual worlds rather than follow clear objectives.
- Adventure players who prefer open-ended wandering over a tightly guided route.
- Players interested in choices that affect a story's direction and ending.
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who need explicit goals may hit a wall when the game leaves objectives unclear.
- Players who expect exploration tasks to provide answers or rewards may find the search and hidden-task systems unrewarding.
- Players looking for a fast-paced, combat-focused adventure may find its meditative focus a mismatch.
Our take on Aquarelle
Players who rely on clear objectives may bounce off early, when the game leaves its goals blurred. The sharper wall comes for anyone who expects hidden tasks to pay off: they can end without rewards, and searches through past projects may leave questions unanswered.
What is Aquarelle?
Aquarelle is a surreal adventure with parkour elements.
Players take the role of D-504, a developer who has fallen into a virtual space, and search for a way out. The game focuses on wandering through remnants of past projects, uncovering hidden tasks, and exploring its game worlds; some searches may not provide answers, and hidden tasks may offer no rewards. Goals are intentionally unclear, and there are many paths through the world. Decisions made during play affect how the plot develops and how it ends. Controls are based on simulated human movement. The experience is presented as a meditative project rather than a task-driven adventure.
How Aquarelle plays
- 01Choice-shaped story
- Decisions during play influence both the plot's progression and its conclusion.
- 02Movement-based controls
- Player input is modeled on real human movement.
- 03Hidden tasks
- Optional tasks can be found in the world, though completing them does not guarantee a reward.
Aquarelle compared to similar games
Jusant is a climbing action-puzzle centered on reaching the top of a tower, managing stamina, and exploring routes; Aquarelle instead centers on movement through a virtual space, hidden tasks, and decisions that shape the story. The other listed alternatives focus on shooting, running, RPG storytelling, or RPG Maker presentation rather than this open-ended surreal adventure.
