Our take on Animal Gods
The game prioritizes compact, skill-led dungeon challenges and a small cast over broad strategic systems. That focus leaves less room for complex puzzle planning or a wide range of gameplay modes, while the optional 09-Lives mode adds a stricter replay challenge.
What is Animal Gods?
Animal Gods is a 2D, top-down action-adventure game about Thistle, a small warrior seeking to destroy the curse affecting fallen animal gods.
Players travel through three dungeons—the Gardens of Gwyn, the Halls of Eynd, and the Coast of Syn—which can be selected in any order. Each dungeon contains a weapon and a weapon upgrade needed to defeat an Animal God. Movement includes a dash that crosses toxic maze-like areas over a fixed distance and time, with a later Long Dash upgrade. Puzzles emphasize skill while adding strategy and luck, and notes from Jessuh, Juliette, and Sven develop the story. After completing normal mode, 09-Lives mode requires finishing dungeons with 09 lives or fewer.
How Animal Gods plays
- 01Flexible Dungeon Order
- The map allows the Gardens of Gwyn, Halls of Eynd, and Coast of Syn to be visited in any sequence.
- 02Dash Movement
- The Cloak of Flame carries Thistle across toxic areas for a set distance and duration, with a Long Dash upgrade available.
- 03Skill-Based Puzzles
- Obstacles call for cautious assessment, with solutions relying mainly on player skill and smaller amounts of strategy and luck.
- 04Character Notes
- Messages from Jessuh, Juliette, and Sven connect the story to the City of Sky Mirror.
- 0509-Lives Mode
- This mode becomes available after a normal completion and limits dungeon runs to 09 lives or fewer.
Animal Gods compared to similar games
Animal Gods combines top-down dungeon selection, fixed-distance dashing, skill-led puzzles, and battles with fallen gods. Jusant instead centers on climbing a tall tower, stamina management, route choice, and uncovering a bygone civilization. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic metroidvania, while Animal Gods uses three selectable dungeons and precision-platforming.
