Our take on 20XX
The run-based structure trades campaign continuity for replayable variation: death ends the current attempt and sends progression back to HQ, while permanent upgrades carry forward. That choice suits short, repeatable attempts but limits uninterrupted story progression.
What is 20XX?
20XX is a roguelike action platformer for one or two players, playable alone or cooperatively on the same couch or online through Steam.
Each run uses newly generated stages, with jumping, shooting, power collection, and boss battles forming the core loop. A failed run returns the character to HQ, where Soul Chips can be spent on permanent upgrades and used to expand the pool of items found in later attempts. The game includes multiple modes, optional difficulty modifiers, and recurring seeded challenges. Standard runs use a single life, while Reverent Mode provides three lives. All gameplay features are available in both single-player and cooperative play.
How 20XX plays
- 01Randomized Stage Runs
- Each attempt generates a different sequence of stages.
- 02Persistent Character Growth
- Soul Chips unlock lasting upgrades and add items to future run pools.
- 03Local Online Co-op
- Two players can play together locally or through Steam.
- 04Over 100 Powerups
- Runs offer more than 100 powers to collect.
- 05Seeded Challenges
- Daily and weekly challenges use seeded runs.
- 06Reverent Mode
- This mode gives a run three lives instead of one.
20XX compared to similar games
Sundered: Eldritch Edition is also a chaotic action platformer with metroidvania structure, while 20XX centers on newly generated stages, run-ending death, and persistent upgrades. Abyssus combines roguelite progression with cooperative multiplayer shooting through hand-crafted levels; 20XX instead focuses on platforming, jumping, and shooting for one or two players.
