Our take on ZAR
The defining structure is a quarantined rural zone where survival is tied to studying zombie behavior and defeating two specially empowered undead enemies.
What is ZAR?
ZAR is a 3D first-person shooter set in a Russian provincial quarantine zone.
After a vaccine is sprayed across the area, people who died during the epidemic rise as zombies six months later. The military fences off the region, and volunteers enter for payment. The player must survive, study zombie strengths and weaknesses, and kill two special zombies. The Gravedigger appears at a village cemetery, attacks with a shovel, and can summon three zombies from a distance. The Fisherman appears near a waterfall, attacks with a hook and fish, and causes intense thirst from afar. A hostile hunter occupies a forest hut and uses a knife and double-barreled sawed-off shotgun. The village also has food, weapon, and medicine vendors.
How ZAR plays
- 01Special zombie hunts
- The Gravedigger and Fisherman appear in separate locations and use different attacks at close and long range.
- 02Hostile hunter
- A hunter near a forest hut attacks approaching people with a knife or a double-barreled sawed-off shotgun.
- 03Trophy weapons
- The hunter's knife and sawed-off shotgun can be collected after his defeat if the player is lucky.
- 04Village vendors
- Food, weapons, and medicine are provided by vendors living in the village.
ZAR compared to similar games
ZAR uses first-person shooting and zombie encounters in a quarantined province, while Mr. Prepper centers on building an underground shelter, crafting, and resisting an authoritarian government. The other listed games use puzzle, prison-escape RPG, bed-and-breakfast management, or physics-based formats rather than ZAR's zombie-shooter structure.
