Zapling Bygone is a metroidvania set on a post-apocalyptic alien planet.
Playing as an alien hive-mind, players defeat bosses and take their skulls, gaining abilities such as wall climbing, swinging through the environment, and firing laser beams. These powers open new routes across an interconnected world. The game includes six biomes with distinct enemies, bosses, and stories. Mutations modify abilities, while skull fragments reveal information about long-dead civilizations. Plasma can be traded for ancient keys, secrets, and paintings. Wearing skulls also provides access to memories and comic panels about their former owners. Exploration gradually assembles the planet’s history, including the origins of the Ratking, a civilization’s pursuit of a false god, and the effects of an alien virus.
