During the night, zombies attack the base, so towers can be researched and upgraded to gain special abilities. Single-player play includes multiple map layouts, themes, power-ups, difficulty settings, and a sandbox mode. In multiplayer, players can cooperate or compete, including in 1v1 and 2v2 matches where zombie factories produce attackers for opponents. Ranked matches use placement games and divisions. The game also includes mods, achievements, building and zombie skins, and additional enemies such as armored, invisible, mage, and pulse zombies.
