Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a narrowly focused battlefield strategy game may hit a wall when city politics, alien infiltration, and multiple hostile factions enter the campaign.
- Players who want one fixed combat format may bounce at the option between real-time and turn-based tactical missions.
- Players looking for a puzzle, racing, or sports game will not find those formats here.
Our take on X-COM: Apocalypse
The likely bounce point is the shift from straightforward alien combat to a wider conflict involving city politics, criminal gangs, religious sects, and police. Players who want only tactical battles may lose interest when managing infiltration and research becomes part of the campaign.
What is X-COM: Apocalypse?
Set in 2084, the game places the X-COM Commander in Mega Primus, a city facing alien attacks, social unrest, and political infiltration.
Alien fleets enter through dimensional gateways while criminal groups, religious sects, and police forces may also become hostile. Operations include real-time battles against alien fleets over the city and tactical missions that can run in real time or turn by turn. The campaign also includes research into alien technology, development of more destructive weapons, suppression of alien sympathizers, and travel to new worlds in the Alien Dimension. The game is the third entry in the X-Com series, following X-COM: UFO Defense and X-COM: Terror from the Deep.

X-COM: Apocalypse compared to similar games
Xenonauts also centers on an organization defending Earth from alien invasion, but its description focuses on small squads, persistent soldiers, and turn-based missions. X-COM: Apocalypse adds real-time fleet battles over Mega Primus, optional real-time tactical combat, urban faction conflicts, and operations in the Alien Dimension.
