Our take on Wizardry: The Five Ordeals
The design pairs party-based dungeon exploration with permanent character loss and overwritable saves. That consequence-heavy structure gives up the safety of recoverable characters and protected progress, making each expedition carry a lasting risk.
What is Wizardry: The Five Ordeals?
Create characters and lead a party of up to 6 members through grid-based dungeons.
Combat is turn-based, combining straightforward JRPG-style battles with the difficulty of tabletop RPGs. Characters can be lost permanently, and saves can be overwritten. The game uses a shared base system for multiple dungeon-crawling RPG scenarios, including official scenarios described as offering dozens of hours of gameplay each. This Steam version retains the core gameplay from 2006 while updating the interface. It also adds widescreen and high-resolution support, 3D mazes and high-resolution monsters, in-game scenario selection, gamepad support, Steam Cloud support, and custom portraits.
