Our take on Vidar
The defining structure is a village story reshaped by randomized nightly deaths: each loss changes relationships, quests, town events, and the puzzle challenge encountered while trying to stop the killings.
What is Vidar?
Vidar is a role-playing adventure in a snowbound town where residents face a growing series of deaths.
A different villager dies each evening, reshaping personal connections, missions, prizes, and happenings throughout the settlement. Since the sequence changes from one game to another, each playthrough produces its own narrative and quest selection. Players must enter an underground puzzle area and combine carried tools with surrounding features to reach its central chamber before the town’s population is gone. Hundreds of possible puzzles can be selected at random. Four environmental regions reinterpret familiar puzzle ideas in distinct ways. Alongside these challenges, the story examines bereavement, shared life, memories of the past, and disappearance.
How Vidar plays
- 01Changing Villager Stories
- Each death alters relationships, quests, rewards, and how surviving townspeople respond.
- 02Randomized Puzzle Selection
- Challenges are chosen from a bank of hundreds, changing the puzzle faced during a new story.
- 03Four Puzzle Biomes
- Each biome presents a different take on classic puzzle mechanics.
- 04Reactive Town Events
- Events in town reflect which jobs remain untended after villagers die.
Vidar compared to similar games
Vidar combines a changing village narrative with randomly selected environmental puzzles. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on an unconventional story and characters, while Back to the Dawn focuses on surviving, investigating, and escaping a prison before time runs out.
