Our take on The Utility Room

The bounce point arrives at traversal: movement alternates between teleportation and smooth locomotion, while larger gaps use a controller-based Leap. Players expecting standard jumping may stop at the vibration-and-swing system, especially when a miscalculated jump has consequences.

What is The Utility Room?

The Utility Room is a VR journey across a barren, rocky world beyond a cosmic doorway.

Players travel through dangerous environments inhabited by strange beings and giant rocky heads while a figure known as Bin man oversees the maintenance of existence. Teleportation and smooth locomotion are both available, with some precarious areas requiring players to use each form of movement. Standard jumping is joined by a Leap mechanic: squeezing both controller grips increases vibration, and swinging the arms determines the jump’s size.

Optional climbing is included but is not a major gameplay element. Eight collectibles represent different rocky heads and add information to the Head Log. The game contains no shooting or flashing lights and is presented as an unusual journey rather than a traditional VR game.

How The Utility Room plays

01Mixed VR movement
Teleportation and smooth locomotion are both available, with some precarious areas requiring different movement methods.
02Grip-based leaping
Squeezing both controller grips increases vibration before an arm swing determines the jump’s size.
03Eight head collectibles
Collected rocky heads provide information through the Head Log.
04Optional climbing
Players can climb, but this mechanic has a limited role in the overall experience.
