Our take on The Forestale
The store presentation gives unusual prominence to the GZDoom foundation and handmade world, while the described play structure is a familiar mix of platforming, hazards, enemies, bosses, ability growth, and timed levels. The engine is distinctive, but the core progression is straightforward.
What is The Forestale?
Play as Alex, a rabbit tasked with saving a fairy-tale forest after a fallen star arrives.
This 3D platformer runs on GZDoom, a modern version of the Doom engine, and does not require the original Doom game. Levels combine platforming with enemies, mechanisms, and hazards that can affect time and the level itself. Alex gains abilities and stat improvements as the adventure progresses, while enemies become more dangerous. The game includes boss encounters, multiple difficulty modes, and secrets to find. Each level also has a PAR time, giving players a target for completing it faster than the developer. The world uses a handmade, old-school 3D style inspired by classic platformers.
How The Forestale plays
- 01PAR time challenges
- Each level has a time target based on the developer’s completion time, with a reward for the quickest players.
- 02Progressive abilities
- Alex can gain new skills and stat increases as the adventure advances.
- 03Difficulty modes
- A hard setting is available for players seeking a tougher challenge.
- 04GZDoom platforming
- The game uses a modern Doom-engine port and runs without the original game.
