Our take on The Darkest Files
The dramatic premise covers two investigations rather than an expansive collection of cases. The page gives equal weight to historical stakes, branching outcomes, visual style, and Esther’s relationships, so the courtroom and evidence systems may form a narrower core than the presentation suggests.
What is The Darkest Files?
Set in Germany in 1956, this adventure game follows Esther Katz, a young prosecutor joining Fritz Bauer’s special unit.
Players investigate two cases based on crimes from the Nazi era by questioning witnesses and suspects, examining fragmented evidence, and assembling possible sequences of events. Testimonies can appear truthful, distorted, or deliberately false through Esther’s “mind’s eye. ” Court proceedings require selecting charges for the accused, with investigative decisions affecting the results. The story includes multiple endings, including outcomes where a perpetrator is brought to justice or remains free. Esther’s family, colleagues, and relationship with Fritz Bauer are also part of the narrative. Presentation uses cell-shaded 3D visuals, 1950s pulp-comic influences, comic panels, and full English voice acting.
