Our take on The 9th Gate
The game replaces a fixed horror sequence with a search that reacts to movement and changes its scares. Its phone is both a way to detect the undead and a liability, while the nine-doll ritual gives the experience a specific objective.
What is The 9th Gate?
The 9th Gate is a survival-horror game set in an apartment believed to be deserted.
After a girl disappears, players search for nine cursed dolls and must destroy each one inside a ritual circle before time runs out. Wandering and aggressive spirits interfere, and destroying a doll brings more dangerous spirits into the apartment. A mobile phone helps detect the undead and listen for dolls, but using its camera can reveal the player to some spirits, while others react to movement. The game tracks player movement to trigger unexpected scares. Its features include nine spirits with different behaviors, parkour-style movement, ghost evasion, and procedurally generated scares.
