We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- RPG players who want character statistics to shape dialogue and problem-solving
- Players who prefer branching quests and consequences over a single prescribed route
- Turn-based RPG fans who want the option to avoid combat
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a long-form RPG rather than a deliberately short game with concentrated depth
- Players who prefer fixed solutions and predictable outcomes instead of stats, choices, and failures changing progression
- Players looking for an action-focused combat game rather than optional, turn-based encounters
- Players seeking a fantasy setting instead of post-apocalyptic space exploration
Our take on Space Wreck
The focus on role-playing trades breadth for concentration: the game is intentionally short, while character limitations and branching outcomes add depth within that smaller structure. Optional combat also means players seeking constant tactical battles may find fewer encounters than in combat-led RPGs.
What is Space Wreck?
Space Wreck is a retro, post-apocalyptic RPG set aboard a stranded spaceship 20 years after a major conflict over asteroid mining.
Character creation assigns abilities and limitations that affect dialogue, hacking, tools, movement, and other interactions. Quests usually offer 3-8 possible solutions, with decisions leading to later events and different ending slides. The world has no single route to completion, and sequence breaking is possible. Combat is optional, allowing a playthrough without killing anyone; fighting uses turn-based, grid-based encounters with action points and dice rolls. Characters can approach problems through conversation, stealth, hacking, theft, or direct force, depending on their skills.
How Space Wreck plays
- 01Stat-driven role-play
- Character attributes can open or block interactions, with weaknesses affecting dialogue, terminals, tools, and movement.
- 02Multiple quest solutions
- Most quests provide 3-8 ways to proceed, with outcomes that can alter later events and the final ending.
- 03Nonlinear exploration
- The spaceship can be approached through different routes, including attempts to complete objectives out of sequence.
- 04Optional combat
- The game can be completed without killing anyone, while every non-player character remains vulnerable if combat is chosen.
- 05Tactical encounters
- Fights use turn-based grid movement, action points, and dice rolls.
Space Wreck compared to similar games
Space Wreck combines a post-apocalyptic spaceship setting with stat-based problem solving, optional combat, and usually 3-8 quest solutions. Back to the Dawn centers on prison escape, crime, and investigation, while Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition focuses on an unconventional story and exploration of a strange city.
