Our take on Smilemo
The defining mechanic is involuntary bouncing: slight contact with the virus sends Smilemo flying out of control. Standard actions such as jumping, wall climbing, and air dashing therefore take place within a movement system that can abruptly alter trajectory.
What is Smilemo?
Smilemo is a side-scrolling platformer set in a computer world disrupted by a virus.
Players control Smilemo, a surviving emoji program, through action-based stages using running, jumping, wall climbing, and air dashes. The virus causes Smilemo to bounce uncontrollably after slight contact, adding a movement constraint to obstacle challenges. Vaccine-code fragments are scattered across the stages and must be collected to eliminate the infection. After failure, players can restart at the nearest checkpoint. The game also includes a boss battle in which Smilemo avoids attacks and later launches a counterattack. With help from the systems manager, Smilemo attempts to restore the vaccine code and bring order back to the infected computer world.
How Smilemo plays
- 01Uncontrolled Bounce Movement
- Contact with the virus makes Smilemo ricochet, changing how obstacles and platforms must be approached.
- 02Air Dash Traversal
- An air dash joins running, jumping, and wall climbing as movement options during stage challenges.
- 03Vaccine Code Collection
- Code fragments placed throughout each stage provide the objective for eliminating the infection.
- 04Checkpoint Restarts
- After failure, Smilemo can resume from the nearest checkpoint.
- 05Boss Counterattack
- The boss encounter involves avoiding attacks before launching a counterattack.
