Our take on Sentenced VR
The presentation foregrounds the dramatic themes of justice, death, and redemption, but the playable scope is a roughly one-hour sequence of execution scenarios. Its moral questions are central, while interaction remains focused on performing and being assessed on those executions.
What is Sentenced VR?
Sentenced is a narrative virtual reality game set in Ulrichshafen, a fictional early-modern European city.
The player takes the role of its executioner, carrying out orders from local lords across multiple scenarios. Each scenario presents a condemned person, a public crowd, an announcement of the alleged crime and sentence, and the prisoner’s final words before the execution. The player physically swings a sword to perform beheadings while being assessed on execution performance. The game examines personal conscience, obedience to authority, institutionalized violence, and the structures that shape individual behavior. It is intended to last around one hour and draws inspiration from social psychology experiments.
