Our take on Ruine
Rather than treating dungeon exploration as a one-way search for loot, Ruine makes the return journey part of keeping what was found. Its side-scrolling format also places the dungeon-crawling RPG in a 2D presentation.
What is Ruine?
Ruine is a side-scrolling fantasy RPG and 2D dungeon crawler with roguelike elements and a souls-like setting.
Players explore forests and ruined dungeons, fight creatures to gain levels, and search for treasure and equipment. Items found during a delve are kept only if the character makes it back out alive. The world is a kingdom consumed by darkness and decay, where creatures that once lived continue to exist and nature has become twisted. Players can use or craft what they find to fight these beings. The story places the action in a forgotten land whose inhabitants are trapped in an unending state between life and death.
How Ruine plays
- 01Return-based loot
- Treasure and equipment found in a dungeon are retained only after making it back out.
- 02Level through combat
- Fighting creatures advances character levels.
- 03Use or craft gear
- Found materials and items can be used or crafted to combat creatures.
Ruine compared to similar games
Vagante also takes place in a dark fantasy world with dangerous creatures, while Ruine specifies side-scrolling dungeon exploration and retaining finds only after returning. Ghost of a Tale centers on stealth, disguises, and conversations in an animal-populated medieval world; Ruine instead focuses on combat, leveling, and dungeon loot.
