Our take on Room 404
The focused anomaly-checking structure keeps the experience short, but that also limits room for extended exploration, character development, and broader mechanical variety. Its multiple endings add branching outcomes without turning the game into a long-form adventure.
What is Room 404?
Room 404 is a first-person horror walking simulator set across an apartment’s four floors.
Players repeatedly inspect a looping fourth-floor corridor and decide whether an anomaly is present. When one appears, the route continues forward; when none is found, the player returns along the same path. A notice board provides guidance, while some anomalies can be lethal. The game uses scene fragments to connect unusual events with the circumstances and wishes of fourth-floor residents. Certain events show possible earlier or later versions of the floor. The experience lasts 30–60 minutes and includes multiple endings. Its setting uses a Chinese retro-horror style with Unreal Engine 5 rendering and scanned assets.
How Room 404 plays
- 01Anomaly Decisions
- Each corridor inspection requires choosing between moving onward and retracing the route.
- 02Multiple Endings
- The 30–60 minute experience branches into more than one conclusion.
- 03Timeline Fragments
- Some unusual events present possible past or future versions of the fourth floor.
- 04Resident Stories
- Events connect to the situations and desires of people living on the fourth floor.
- 05Notice Board
- An in-game notice provides information relevant to navigating the apartment.
