Our take on Recesses

Rather than treating defeat as a simple reset, the game makes losing part of its progression: losses reveal dialogue, open strategic possibilities, and provide another booster pack. Its school-break setting also replaces the usual fantasy or military backdrop with elementary-school card battles.

What is Recesses?

Recesses is a single-player card game adventure set during elementary-school outdoor breaks.

Each day presents battles against unusual classmates who played Battaliens with the protagonist’s missing best friend. The game includes more than 100 cards with distinct abilities, artwork, combos, and flavor text. Losing unlocks additional dialogue, new strategies, and another booster pack, while victories advance the story from Monday toward Friday’s playground boss. Win and loss records affect multiple scenarios across more than 110,000 words of dialogue.

The campaign takes approximately 15–30 hours, with additional post-game challenge content. The game also includes more than 30 music tracks, over 13 opponents with individual strategies and theme songs, bird puns, and a goat. It is recommended for ages 13 and up and contains mild profanity.

Shogun Showdown also combines turn-based battles with deck building, but its description centers on positioning, attack tiles, upgrades, and facing the Shogun. Recesses instead ties card battles to a five-day schoolyard adventure, branching dialogue, and a missing-friend story. Back to the Dawn is an RPG about investigating and escaping a prison, whereas Recesses focuses on card battles and collection-building.
