Our take on Protocol
Rather than following a single action or adventure template, Protocol combines puzzles, shooting, and exploration with comedy and horror. Its central structure hinges on obeying an AI’s rules, with death and repeated attempts presented as part of getting through deadlocks.
What is Protocol?
Protocol centers on a soldier dispatched to the Arctic Circle after an alien craft crashes there.
The mission is to initiate contact with the extraterrestrial under the direction of a secretive AI. Disobeying its instructions can mean the soldier and the research facility are destroyed. The game combines action, adventure, puzzles, and shooting with science-fiction comedy, horror elements, and a romance. Its story features conspiracies, unexpected turns, and dark humour. Some impasses can only be passed by dying, and certain sections may have to be played again. The stated playtime is 9–12 hours.
How Protocol plays
- 01Rule-based objectives
- Following the AI’s instructions is central to the first-contact mission, while deviations trigger severe consequences.
- 02Repeated death sequences
- Some impasses may only be resolved through death, and the game warns that moments may need to be replayed.
- 03Genre mix
- The game combines action and adventure with puzzle, shooter, horror, and comedy elements.
