Our take on PAIN
The single-map climbing structure concentrates the experience on repeated attempts and recovery from falls, leaving less room for broader mission variety or conventional progression systems.
What is PAIN?
PAIN is a climbing game built around deliberate, high-consequence jumps.
Players aim each launch and ascend a single large mountain map, where a mistake can send the character a short distance or a much longer fall. The journey passes through varied environments with distinct gameplay changes and hidden areas to discover. Strange characters appear along the route, and falling provides opportunities to learn more about them. Reaching the summit is the central objective, with no other destination described. The game takes inspiration from Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy and Jump King.
How PAIN plays
- 01Risky Mountain Climbing
- Each jump must be aimed carefully because a failed launch can cause a fall ranging from a few meters to several miles.
- 02Single Large Map
- The ascent takes place across one continuous mountain area containing multiple environments and hidden locations.
- 03Character Encounters
- Unusual characters appear during the climb, with additional information revealed after repeated falls.
PAIN compared to similar games
PAIN centers on aiming and launching through a single large mountain, where falls can remove substantial progress. Jusant is also a climbing journey, but it emphasizes mastering climbing tools, monitoring stamina, choosing routes, and uncovering the history of a tall tower. The other listed alternatives describe shooters, runner-shooters, or a metroidvania rather than climbing-focused ascent games.
