Is Overcome worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Platformer fans who want demanding timing-based movement
- Players interested in games about grief and personal hardship
- Action players who enjoy repeated attempts across difficult levels
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a relaxed platformer may hit a wall at the fast, timing-sensitive jumping.
- Players wanting a large campaign may find the four-level structure too narrow.
- Players looking for platforming without combat may not fit the enemy encounters and shield mechanics.
Our take on Overcome
The bounce point comes with the first sequence of timing-sensitive jumps and repeated deaths. Players expecting a forgiving platformer may stop when movement, blocking, and gliding must be combined to pass difficult obstacles.
What is Overcome?
Overcome is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer about grief and how it changes perception of the world.
It uses fast, timing-sensitive jumps to move through landscapes shaped by this theme. A shield allows players to block and deflect enemies, then glide over foes, obstacles, and other challenges. Enemies attack in several ways, and encounters can end with foes left alive or defeated. The game contains four extremely challenging levels where repeated deaths are expected. Its themes are conveyed through metaphors, expressive pixel art, and an emotional soundtrack connected to the developer's experiences with cancer and heartbreak.
How Overcome plays
- 01Shield-based movement
- The shield can block attacks, redirect enemies, and carry the player over hazards.
- 02Timing-focused platforming
- Fast jumps require precise timing while crossing the game's themed environments.
- 03Four challenging levels
- The game is divided into four stages that may require many attempts.
- 04Metaphorical presentation
- Pixel art and music convey the game's themes through metaphor.
Overcome compared to similar games
Overcome centers on difficult 2D platforming, shield-based defense, and four grief-themed levels. Jusant focuses on climbing a tower, managing stamina, choosing routes, and exploring at the player's pace. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic metroidvania with prior updates and an additional update.
