Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking branching choices or a heavily nonlinear story may reach the game's mainly linear narrative structure as a limit.
- Players wanting a large, combat-focused RPG may bounce off the short six-act format and its emphasis on story, exploration and interactions.
- Players uninterested in optional collectibles, gallery unlocks or music-room secrets may find parts of the world unnecessary.
Our take on oath
Players looking for branching role-playing systems may bounce off the mainly linear progression through six acts. The larger exploration payoff arrives only after completing the main story, when replaying opens the multi-hour epilogue.
What is oath?
Oath is a short interactive story combining explorable, top-down RPG-style areas with visual-novel scenes across six mainly linear acts.
The narrative follows a person returning to a familiar town and confronting a forgotten past. Its world includes three areas—the City, Coast and Underwater Depths—with buildings to enter, objects to interact with, characters to meet, quests, fishing, karaoke, seashell collecting and house purchasing. Completing the main story opens a multi-hour epilogue in which the towns can be explored again. A built-in player contains the EP connected to the game, while completed acts unlock cover art and other gallery images. Optional passcodes open more than 90 rooms featuring music from other artists, with an achievement tied to finding some of them.
