Our take on Neocolonialism
Its defining constraint is that power comes from purchased votes, trade agreements, and IMF control rather than armies or directly controlled territory.
What is Neocolonialism?
Neocolonialism is a strategy game about bankers competing to extract wealth from the global economy and place it in secret Swiss bank accounts.
The player with the most Swiss money after 12 turns wins. Players can buy parliamentary votes, sell votes to incite military coups, and use free trade agreements to redirect industrial wealth from mines to factories. Controlling the IMF allows policy decisions to be imposed without approval from a regional parliament. The game does not include armies or direct territory control; influence is spread through votes, trade agreements, and institutional control. It supports solo play against AI and multiplayer play against people. The world map is presented upside-down.
How Neocolonialism plays
- 01Twelve-turn competition
- The winner is the player with the most money in a Swiss account when the 12-turn game ends.
- 02Vote-based influence
- Parliamentary votes can be purchased or sold to support military coups.
- 03Global trade control
- Free trade agreements redirect industrial wealth between mines and factories.
- 04IMF policy control
- The International Monetary Fund can impose policies without regional parliamentary approval.
- 05Solo and multiplayer
- Matches can be played against artificial intelligence or people.
- 06Upside-down map
- The game presents its world map in an inverted orientation.
Neocolonialism compared to similar games
Xenonauts centers on commanding squads of persistent soldiers against an alien invasion, while Neocolonialism uses votes, trade, and financial influence without armies. Old World follows empires across multiple generations with marriage, heirs, and territorial management; Neocolonialism instead resolves its contest over 12 turns through economic and institutional manipulation.
