Our take on Mainlining
The key sticking point is case timing: closing an investigation too soon can leave important leads undiscovered, while waiting can alert a suspect and let them escape. Players who prefer a clear point at which every case is complete may find that decision difficult.
What is Mainlining?
After MI7 is hacked, a newly recruited agent investigates a cyber-criminal network using a simulated computer desktop.
This point-and-click adventure centers on accessing suspects’ computers and phones to collect evidence and decide when a case is ready to close. Moving too quickly can leave leads undiscovered, while delaying may alert a suspect and allow an escape. Cases are set within a story about government access to personal data under the BLU Pill Act, with dark, dry humor and questions about privacy and surveillance. The game presents more than five hundred known criminals within the agent’s jurisdiction. The player must pursue arrests and gather enough evidence for court proceedings.
How Mainlining plays
- 01Case timing
- Closing an investigation early can leave links to higher-profile criminals undiscovered, while waiting too long can give a suspect time to escape.
- 02Desktop investigations
- Evidence gathering takes place through the protagonist’s computer, including access to suspects’ phones and computers.
- 03Privacy themes
- The story explores government access to personal data through the fictional BLU Pill Act.
