Is Legacy of Vane worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Story-focused RPG players who want a family mystery involving divine and demonic powers
- Turn-based combat fans who want commands that deny enemy turns
- Players who prefer alternate routes through social influence, enemy conversion, and wall passage
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a light, low-stakes story may find the plot centered on executions, disappearances, corruption, and the end of the world too heavy
- Players who want constant random encounters may find the fixed encounter structure too controlled
- Players looking for a purely combat-focused RPG may not want mechanics built around persuasion, transformation, and traversal
Our take on Legacy of Vane
Its defining structure is the combination of active turn-based combat with powers that can replace fighting, including converting enemies into stat-increasing Jewels and passing through narrow walls.
What is Legacy of Vane?
Legacy of Vane follows a former templar who leaves the Order after uncovering questionable reasons behind the execution of their mother.
With siblings taken and a missing father, the protagonist searches for the truth while carrying powers from the Goddess Azraelle and the Archdemon Zelbog. Archdemon gifts provide several approaches: Charm influences people, Transform converts enemies into Jewels that grant stat increases and abilities drawn from those enemies, and Shadowstep passes through narrow walls to bypass locked routes or reach treasure. Battles use an active turn-based system, including a Disrupt command for denying enemy turns and protecting allies. Weapons and armor can conceal powers that affect combat, and encounters are not random.
How Legacy of Vane plays

- Charm can force characters to like the protagonist, producing gifts or favorable treatment.
- 02Enemy transformation
- Transform turns foes into Jewels that provide stat increases and abilities drawn from those enemies.
- 03Wall passage
- Shadowstep lets the protagonist cross narrow sections of wall to evade threats or reach chests.
- 04Turn denial

- 05Hidden equipment powers
- Weapons and armor contain abilities that can be invoked during combat.
- 06Fixed encounters
- Combat does not begin through random battles.
Legacy of Vane compared to similar games
Legacy of Vane combines a family mystery with active turn-based combat, enemy-turn disruption, noncombat enemy transformation, and wall traversal. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on exploring a strange and dangerous city, while Back to the Dawn focuses on surviving and escaping a maximum-security prison. Tales of Symphonia presents an adventure across two interlocked worlds rather than Legacy of Vane's search for a missing family and the truth behind a mother's execution.
