Our take on Kung Fu Grand King
The quick-time combat keeps encounters focused on speed and timing, but sacrifices the broader turn-by-turn decision-making found in standard JRPG battles. Town scenes add social attention to the tournament structure rather than replacing it.
What is Kung Fu Grand King?
Lan Mei, a former imperial hero who now runs a dojo, returns to martial arts after her old master asks her to enter a tournament.
She faces unusual and formidable opponents while opposing an organization recruiting martial artists for a scheme against the Empire. Combat uses quick-time events: players strike enemies’ pressure points, but slow responses let opponents retaliate. Outside the tournament, Lan Mei can walk through the Jade Capital and speak with residents about recent developments. Her tournament performances and actions in town can increase her public profile, while paparazzi may pursue her. The adventure takes place in an ancient-China-inspired fantasy setting and follows Lan Mei’s progress toward the organization’s leader, the Kung Fu Master directing its plans.
