Saves you a refund- Players seeking conventional RPG combat that does not require learning Japanese words and kana

- Players looking for the complete planned story rather than Part 1 of an ongoing development
- Players who prefer RPGs focused on prison escape, puzzle solving, or other systems described for the alternatives
Our take on Koe (声): Part 1
The likely bounce point arrives when Japanese becomes the combat system rather than a background theme. Players who do not want to learn kana and words to attack, defend, or heal may hit that wall before the fantasy-world investigation becomes central.
What is Koe (声): Part 1?
Koe (声): Part 1 is a narrative-driven JRPG-inspired language-learning game set across rural Japan and the fantasy world of Koe.
The player begins as a high school exchange student in Sakurachou, where interactions with locals and a homestay family introduce Japanese language learning. A shrine’s mystery leads to battles, cities, caves, and an investigation involving Princess Fleur and her family. Japanese kana and words form the combat system: they can be developed and used for attacks, defense, healing, and other battle functions. Returning to Sakurachou provides access to more words, while exploration across both worlds expands the available vocabulary. Part 2 is described as a free update being prepared for release.
How Koe (声): Part 1 plays
- 01Language-Based Combat
- Japanese words serve as battle tools for attacking, defending, and healing.
- 02Kana Progression
- Individual kana are developed as the building blocks for using Japanese in battles.
- 03Two-World Setting
- The story moves between Sakurachou and a fantasy realm containing cities, caves, shrines, and battles.
- 04Exchange Student Story
- The opening places the player in Japan, where a homestay family and local residents introduce the setting.
Koe (声): Part 1 compared to similar games
Koe (声): Part 1 combines JRPG exploration and battles with Japanese vocabulary and kana progression. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on a story-led fantasy RPG, while Back to the Dawn focuses on surviving, investigating, and escaping a prison. Tales of Symphonia presents an adventure about two interlocked worlds, without the language-learning combat described for Koe.
