- Players seeking a puzzle-focused or prison-escape RPG will find a different gameplay focus here.
Our take on Holy Grain
The pitch foregrounds absurd comedy and rebellion, but the game also contains a large amount of narrative text and addresses abuse, drug use, and discrimination. Its run structure is consequential: death ends a run, and completing the final continent requires defeating each final boss.
What is Holy Grain?
Holy Grain is a text-heavy roguelite about an average child drawn from a quiet life of planting carrots into a campaign against a tyrant.
The Counselor guides the journey, with the Entity also named as a companion. Travel through regions with different climates, weighing army resources against local dangers. Progress triggers semi-random events, where decisions affect what happens next. Some events lead to fast-paced battles that call for quick decisions; defeat means game over. The campaign features five factions, and each continent has its own structure and ruling faction. To finish the final continent and advance the story, players must defeat each final boss. The narrative includes sensitive subjects such as abuse, drug use, and discrimination.
