Our take on Hokkaido Game
The defining mechanic is geographic: matching falling prefectures merge upward through Japan’s regional hierarchy until the board produces Hokkaido.
What is Hokkaido Game?
Hokkaido Game is a physics-based falling-block puzzle centered on Japan’s prefectures.
Players drop prefecture pieces into a container, where matching pieces combine and develop into larger prefectures. The objective is to reach Hokkaido, identified as Japan’s largest prefecture, before the container overflows. Survivor Mode adds a separate roguelite-style structure: players choose a prefecture for evolution, and selected choices can alter the play area, bouncing behavior, falling rotation, or introduce UFOs. Prefectures made in this mode are added to a map, with the stated long-term aim of creating all prefectures and restoring the Japanese islands.
How Hokkaido Game plays
- 01Prefecture Merging
- Matching pieces combine into progressively larger Japanese prefectures as they land.
- 02Overflow Objective
- The standard mode ends around the goal of forming Hokkaido before the container becomes full.
- 03Survivor Mode
- This additional mode uses evolving selections that can change field width, bounce behavior, rotation, or add UFOs.
- 04Island Map Progress
- Prefectures produced in Survivor Mode are recorded on a map toward completing the Japanese islands.
