Our take on Hieroglyphika
The bounce point comes when players encounter an unfamiliar hieroglyph or artifact and must work out its meaning without written guidance. Anyone expecting a tutorial to explain the rules will need to rely on observation and experimentation instead.
What is Hieroglyphika?
Hieroglyphika is a text-free roguelike set in an ancient Egyptian pyramid beneath the desert.
Players move through dangerous corridors, encountering traps and monsters as they descend. Opening sarcophagi and defeating enemies can yield loot. Combat is turn-based, with options including casting spells, defending with shields, striking with enchanted weapons, and pushing enemies into pits. Players decode hieroglyphs to learn spells and understand magical artifacts. The game offers no hand-holding: its rules and mechanics must be discovered through observation and experimentation. Random events can combine in unusual ways, calling for new approaches during exploration.

Hieroglyphika compared to similar games
Shogun Showdown also has turn-based roguelike combat, with positioning, attack tiles, combos, skills, and deck building. Hieroglyphika centers on exploring an Egyptian pyramid, interpreting pictograms, and using spells, shields, weapons, and environmental hazards. Back to the Dawn focuses on investigating a prison and planning an escape, rather than deciphering pictograms while descending through pyramid corridors.
