We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who enjoy turn-based action limits and tactical positioning
- Roguelike fans who want each run to vary through randomized maps and rewards
- Players who like combining class abilities, buildings, equipment, and Perks
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fixed campaign may find the changing island, enemies, and rewards too variable
- Players who prefer real-time combat may not enjoy the deliberate, Action Point-based pacing
- Players looking for a broad class roster may find three available classes limiting
Our take on Hexrogue
Its run-based randomness creates varied tactical situations, but also gives up predictable planning: map layouts, enemy appearances, equipment drops, and Perk choices can all change between attempts.
What is Hexrogue?
Hexrogue is a turn-based strategy roguelike played on a hexagonal island that changes between runs.
Each turn provides a limited number of Action Points for movement, combat, construction, and other actions. Players can establish villages that attack nearby enemies, mines or plantations that generate resources, and workshops for equipment crafting. Enemies appear regularly, while defeating them grants experience and randomly offered Perks. One of three classes can be selected, each with different abilities and play styles. Maps, opponents, equipment drops, and Perk choices are randomized. Coins earned during runs, including failed attempts, can buy power-ups that alter progression or play style.
How Hexrogue plays
- 01Action Point Turns
- A limited action budget governs movement, attacks, construction, and other activities each round.
- 02Island Construction
- Villages, resource-producing sites, and workshops provide defensive, economic, and crafting functions.
- 03Three Classes
- Each class offers a different set of abilities and approach to play.
- 04Randomized Runs
- The island layout, enemies, equipment rewards, and Perk selections change from one attempt to the next.
- 05Persistent Coin Rewards
- Coins earned during a run can be spent on power-ups even when that run ends unsuccessfully.
