Our take on Herder
The action and defense framing gives the game a more intense profile than its full structure suggests. Runs also depend on maintaining the flock through grazing, winter feeding, disease, and dwindling trade access, while the stated session length is only a couple of hours.
What is Herder?
Herder combines third-person action, tower defense, herding, and resource management.
Players guide sheep and goats through procedurally generated alpine pastures, placing defensive items before opening each area and protecting livestock from wild animals. Grass and wildflowers eventually run out, requiring migration to new meadows. Trade caravans buy wool, milk, and livestock and sell animals or equipment. The flock can breed, graze, be milked, and be sheared across changing seasons, with hay needed in winter. Runs end when the flock is sold or lost to predators, starvation, or disease, with final cash recorded as a high score. A casual mode removes hostile threats and lets the flock graze peacefully.
How Herder plays
- 01Procedural Pastures
- Each migration moves the flock through newly generated alpine meadows with fewer caravans farther into the wild.
- 02Flock Management
- Sheep and goats consume available vegetation, reproduce, provide milk and wool, and require care across seasonal changes.
- 03Trade Caravans
- Passing merchants provide a market for livestock products and a source of additional animals and defensive equipment.
- 04Defensive Preparation
- Players arrange protective items before opening the gate and exposing the flock to wild animals.
- 05Casual Mode
- A separate mode removes hostile encounters and allows peaceful grazing.
- 06Herding Dog
- A dog companion accompanies the flock during the herding adventure.
Herder compared to similar games
Herder combines third-person defense with flock breeding, seasonal care, migration, and trading. Dungeon Defenders: Awakened instead centers on cooperative action RPG and tower defense with loot, leveling, pets, and character customization. Anomaly: Warzone Earth uses a reversed tower-defense structure focused on directing action against alien turrets, rather than managing livestock and pasture resources.
